Trading Journal Guide for Gold Traders: What to Record and Why
Memory flatters. A trading journal replaces feelings with evidence, and it is one of the few habits nearly every consistent trader shares.
What to record for every trade
- Setup and reason: which conditions were present (link the BlessedForex setup if you used one)
- Direction, entry, stop, target, position size
- Risk in money and in R — see R-multiples
- Result: win, loss, break-even and R achieved
- Screenshot before entry and after exit
- Emotion before and during: calm, anxious, greedy, bored
- Mistake, if any: early entry, moved stop, oversized, ignored rules
Record the skips too
Note the setups you didn't take and why. This shows whether you skip good trades or bad ones. See why no trade is a position.
Weekly review
- Total R for the week and win/loss count.
- Your most common mistake and how often it occurred.
- Performance by session — do you do better in London or New York?
- One rule to improve next week. Only one.
Metrics that matter
- Expectancy in R
- Adherence: what percentage of trades followed your rules?
- Average loss versus planned loss (are stops being respected?)
Using the BlessedForex journal
The journal is private to your account, stores screenshots privately, calculates R automatically when you leave it blank, and shows total R, wins, losses and your most common mistake.
Compare with the model
Set journal results next to the platform's setup outcomes and your demo forward tests. The gap is your biggest learning opportunity.
Tone
Review yourself like a coach, not a judge. The aim is to see the pattern, then adjust the rule. Read also FOMO and revenge trading.
Questions & answers
How detailed should my journal be?
Detailed enough to reconstruct why you traded. A few minutes per trade — reason, risk, result, emotion, screenshot — is plenty.
Do I need to journal demo trades?
Yes. Demo journaling builds the habit and gives you data about your behaviour before real money is involved.
What is the most valuable field in a journal?
For many traders it is the mistake field, because repeated mistakes are the fastest fix available.
Is my BlessedForex journal private?
Yes. Entries and screenshots are visible only to your account, and screenshots are stored privately.
