Market Structure

Market Structure Explained: HH, HL, LH and LL on Gold

27 Aug 2026 · 2 min read · By BlessedForex

Market structure is the path price has taken, described by its swing highs and lows. It answers a simple question: is the market making progress up, down, or neither?

The four labels

  • HH – Higher High: a new swing high above the previous one.
  • HL – Higher Low: a new swing low above the previous one.
  • LH – Lower High: a swing high below the previous one.
  • LL – Lower Low: a swing low below the previous one.

Reading the structure

Pattern Structure
HH + HL Bullish
LH + LL Bearish
HH + LL (expanding) or LH + HL (contracting) Transition
Not enough swings yet Neutral

Structure on several timeframes

Structure is fractal: the daily chart can be bullish while M5 is bearish. That is why traders read a higher timeframe for bias and a lower one for entries. See higher-timeframe bias.

What breaks structure

A break of structure continues a trend; a market structure shift signals that the prior character may be changing. Both are decided by candle closes by default, not wicks.

Common mistakes

  • Labelling structure from unconfirmed swings that later disappear.
  • Mixing timeframes: an M5 lower low inside a daily uptrend is not a "bearish market".
  • Forcing a label when structure is genuinely a range.

How BlessedForex uses it

Structure feeds the bias factors (shown with a score for each) and the MSS rule. Every factor is stored, so you can always see why the dashboard says bullish, bearish, neutral or mixed.

Questions & answers

What is the difference between structure and trend?

Trend is the general direction; structure is the specific sequence of highs and lows that defines it. Structure is more precise because you can test it with rules.

Can structure be bullish and bearish at once?

On different timeframes, yes. On one timeframe it can be in transition when highs and lows point in opposite directions.

Which timeframe should I read structure on?

Use a higher one (D1, H4, H1) for bias and a lower one (M15, M5) for execution. BlessedForex computes bias on D1, H4 and H1 and executes on M5.

Do I count wicks or closes?

Swings are detected from highs and lows, but a structure break is confirmed by a close beyond the swing by default. A wick-only mode exists in the settings.
