Market Structure Shift (MSS) vs Change of Character (CHoCH)
Both terms describe price breaking structure against the prevailing trend. Traders use them loosely; a rule-based engine has to be exact.
Change of Character (CHoCH)
The first close beyond a swing against the current trend. In a downtrend that is a close above the latest lower high; in an uptrend, a close below the latest higher low.
Market Structure Shift (MSS)
A CHoCH that comes with a meaningful move — in BlessedForex, the breaking candle is a displacement candle, and in a setup it follows a liquidity sweep. The extra conditions filter out weak, easily reversed breaks.
The bullish MSS sequence
- Short-term structure has been bearish (lower high or lower low).
- Sell-side liquidity is swept and reclaimed.
- A bullish displacement candle appears.
- Price closes above the last meaningful lower high.
The bearish MSS is the mirror image. A single strong candle without this context is not an MSS.
The prior-structure test
If price sweeps a low and then breaks the last high, but structure was already bullish, that break is a continuation (BOS), not a shift. BlessedForex checks for opposing prior structure (a lower high or lower low before the sweep) and fails the MSS condition if it is missing.
Timing window
The shift should follow the sweep reasonably soon — by default within 24 candles. A break long after the sweep has little connection to it.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong swing: it must be the last swing before the extreme of the sweep.
- Confusing an internal wobble with a shift on the timeframe that matters.
- Entering at the break instead of waiting for a retracement into a fair value gap.
Questions & answers
Are MSS and CHoCH the same thing?
Many educators use them interchangeably. BlessedForex treats CHoCH as any first counter-trend close break and MSS as a CHoCH with displacement in a sweep context.
Why must the MSS follow a liquidity sweep?
The sweep supplies the reason for a reversal. A structure break with no liquidity event is more likely to be noise or a pause in the trend.
Which swing should the MSS break?
The most recent swing high (for a bullish shift) formed before the sweep extreme, and confirmed at the time of the break.
Can an MSS fail?
Yes. If price returns beyond the sweep extreme or the stop level, the setup is invalidated and the reason is recorded.
