What Is Displacement in Trading? Measuring Real Intent

31 Aug 2026 · 2 min read · By BlessedForex

Displacement is a strong, one-directional move that shows genuine intent, as opposed to the overlapping, indecisive candles of a range. In ICT-style trading it often marks the point where a reversal becomes credible after a liquidity sweep.

Why "a big candle" is not enough

A 10-point candle means something very different on a quiet Asian session than during New York. Displacement must be relative to recent volatility.

The two measurable rules

BlessedForex flags a displacement candle when both hold:

  1. Body ≥ ATR × multiplier. The candle body must be at least, for example, 1.5× the average true range of the previous 14 candles (the candle itself is excluded from its own benchmark).
  2. Body ÷ range ≥ ratio. The body must fill most of the candle (default 60%), so long wicks do not qualify.

Both numbers (ATR period, multiplier, body ratio) are configurable and audited.

Other signs of displacement

Not required by the rule, but typical: the candle breaks a swing (a BOS or MSS) and leaves a fair value gap behind it.

What displacement tells you

  • Aggressive participation in one direction.
  • Where an order block (the last opposing candle) may sit.
  • A reference for where price may retrace to.

What it does not tell you

Whether the move continues. Displacement can be followed by an immediate full retracement, which is why a stop-loss and minimum risk-to-reward are still required.

Practical tip

Look for displacement after liquidity is taken and during an active session. The same candle outside those conditions carries much less weight.

Questions & answers

What ATR period should I use?

Fourteen is the common default. Shorter periods react faster to volatility changes; longer periods smooth them. Test alternatives before changing.

Can displacement be more than one candle?

Yes, a series of strong same-direction candles can form displacement. The BlessedForex rule checks candles individually, which is a deliberately simple and testable definition.

Is displacement always followed by a fair value gap?

Often but not always. A gap forms only when the wicks of the surrounding candles do not overlap.

Does displacement work outside sessions?

It can appear at any time, but candles during thin liquidity are more likely to be noise. Timing conditions help filter them.
